Code of conduct

Our pledge

Recursion exists so people can talk about hard problems in functional programming without also having to manage harassment, exclusion, or bad behaviour from other attendees. We want everyone (speakers, attendees, sponsors, volunteers, and organisers) to have a safe and welcoming experience, regardless of experience level, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, or nationality.

Expected behaviour

Be respectful. Disagree about type systems, language design, or tabs versus spaces as much as you like: attack the argument, not the person.

Be considerate of how your words and actions affect others. A packed room, a loud reaction, or a pointed question can land very differently than you intend.

Communicate openly, and assume good faith from the people around you, in the same way you'd want it assumed of you.

Step back when asked. If someone tells you a comment or behaviour made them uncomfortable, the right response is to stop, not to explain why it shouldn't have.

Unacceptable behaviour

Harassment of any kind, including offensive comments related to the personal characteristics listed above; deliberate intimidation; stalking or following; sustained disruption of talks or other events; unwelcome physical contact; and unwelcome sexual attention.

Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or electronic address, without explicit permission.

Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour.

This applies to talks, panels, and lightning talks themselves: content that includes sexualised imagery, slurs, or content that demeans a person or group has no place at Recursion, on stage or off it.

Scope

This code of conduct applies at the conference venue during Recursion 2026, at every official social event around it (including the evening reception), and in the conference's online spaces (its Slack, IRC, and mailing lists) for as long as they're active.

Reporting

If you're being harassed, notice someone else being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of the organising team immediately. Organisers can be identified by their badge, or found at the registration desk for the duration of the conference.

You can also reach us in writing at any time, before or during the event.

Enforcement

Organisers will respond promptly to any report, and are empowered and expected to take whatever action is appropriate, from a private conversation to immediate removal from the venue without a refund. We will prioritise the safety and comfort of the person who was harassed over the comfort of the person accused of harassing them.

Sponsors, speakers, and volunteers are held to this code of conduct exactly as attendees are.
